Are you struggling with growing you type 4 hair? Then this is the blog post for you! So let's get into this!

When it comes to taking care of type 4 hair you need to look at hair types that look like yours. That is why it is great that you are here!

1. Be A Lazy Natural

It is ok to not style your hair everyday. It is actually even better to not meddle with your hair on a daily basis. Remember, less is more. Just in case you don't know what it means to be a "lazy natural" here is my definition. A lazy natural is someone who does very little to their hair. They do not meddle with their hair very often, but they still keep their hair healthy (I will teach how to do that in another blog post). In summary, doing very little to your hair will help it a lot. Let your hair rest.

2. You Don't Need EVERY Product

Trust me, I know that it is tempting to buy every product you see on the internet but you don't need to. Buying every product you see is a waste of money. You should have a few set products that work for your hair (not other people's hair). Of course you shouldn't be afraid to try new products because you could miss out on a really good product.

3. You Are What You Eat (and drink)

Have you every heard the expression "You are what you eat"? Well, that expression applies a lot to type 4 hair. When it comes to eating and drinking you should try your best to eat healthily. If you are not eating healthy food, your hair won't grow as much as it could be growing. It's still fine to eat the occasional dessert or fast food though. Your hair obviously needs water to flourish so you should try your best to drink quite a bit of water everyday.

4. Health Over Length

I know this one is true because I used to focus on my hair's length, not my hair's health. If your hair is not healthy, it will not grow as much as it has the potential to. Just think about it; if your hair is always dry and you are not taking care of it, how can you expect it to grow? So make sure that you pay attention to what you are doing to your hair. Believe me, it matters.

5. Protective Styles

People may have told you that protective styles (such as box raids, passion twists, etc.) do not work. They may not work for them, but I find them very effective. It is a very efficient way to protect the ends of your hair (the oldest parts of your hair). Protective styles are also very good when it comes to keeping your hands out of your hair. That's why you should leave your protective styles in your hair for 2-3 months.

6. Deep Conditioning

Deep conditioner locks moisture in your hair. Deep conditioner is a special kind of conditioner that helps you deeply moisturize your hair. When you put it in your hair, you should leave it in for 45-60 minutes. Then you should wash it out and moisturize your hair with water, leave-in conditioner, and then seal the moisture in with an oil (olive oil, Jamaican black castor oil, etc.) a.k.a the LCO method (liquid, leave-in, and oil). In another blog post I will talk about my favorite deep conditioners.

7. Keep Your Hair Stretched

You most likely haven't heard this point before but stretching your hair can help with length a lot. Keeping your hair stretched will help prevent/ minimize tangles. Since you are stretching your hair, it will keep your strands separated while protecting your ends. Some methods of stretching your hair are doing cornrows and braiding your hair.

8. Silk and Satin

Silk and Satin are your best friends. When you go to sleep you need to put your hair in a silk/ satin bonnet. If you don't want to put a silk/ satin bonnet on, you could use a silk/ satin pillowcase instead. Both of these work very effectively. Using silk and/ or satin to protect your hair when you go to sleep is great because they do not take away the moisture from your hair like cotton and wool does.

9. Use Little To No Heat

Are you someone that tends to straighten their hair every day? Every week? Do you blow dry your hair everyday? If you do, I recommend that you stop. Straightening your hair everyday/ every week will cause your hair to become heat damaged. When you wash your hair, are the curls on your ends looser than they used to be? This may mean that you hair is heat damaged. You may want to cut the damaged ends off of your hair but I recommend that you watch a YouTube video on how to trim your hair properly first, wait for me to make a blog post about it, make sure that your hair is actually heat damaged, and discuss it with your parent/ guardian.

10. Patience and Love

You probably don't want to hear this but growing your hair out takes time. Please don't try to see how long your hair is every day. Do however, take photos of your length every month so that you can see your progress over a certain period of time. Last of all, love your hair. Your hair is beautiful and you should love it will all your heart.
